    Chemical equilibration and thermal dilepton production from the quark gluon plasma at finite baryon density

    The chemical equilibration of a highly unsaturated quark-gluon plasma has been studied at finite baryon density. It is found that in the presence of small amount of baryon density, the chemical equilibration for gluon becomes slower and the temperature decreases less steeply as compared to the baryon free plasma. As a result, the space time integrated yield of dilepton is enhanced if the initial temperature of the plasma is held fixed. Even at a fixed initial energy density, the suppression of the dilepton yields at higher baryo-chemical potential is compensated, to a large extent, by the slow cooling of the plasma.Comment: Latex, 19 pages, 8 postscript figures.     Boldness traits, not dominance, predict exploratory flight range and homing behaviour in homing pigeons

    This study investigated whether consistent individual differences in behaviour (particularly exploratory tendency and object neophilia) were associated with the tendency to explore in free-ranging scenarios. This was tested in homing pigeons. The results showed that birds that were more likely to explore in the loft were also more likely to explore the local area during self-driven flights. When birds were released from a fixed release points, those which had explored less took more tortuous and longer routes back to the loft. This demonstrates the cost associated with lack of exploratory behaviour, and also links traits measured in laboratory scenarios to behaviour in free-ranging animals

    The role of noise and dissipation in the hadronization of the quark-gluon plasma

    We discuss the role of noise and dissipation in the explosive spinodal decomposition scenario of hadron production during the chiral transition after a high-energy heavy ion collision. We use a Langevin description inspired by nonequilibrium field theory to perform real-time lattice simulations of the behavior of the chiral fields.     Random walks of partons in SU(N_c) and classical representations of color charges in QCD at small x

    The effective action for wee partons in large nuclei includes a sum over static color sources distributed in a wide range of representations of the SU(N_c) color group. The problem can be formulated as a random walk of partons in the N_c-1 dimensional space spanned by the Casimirs of SU(N_c). For a large number of sources, k >> 1, we show explicitly that the most likely representation is a classical representation of order O(\sqrt{k}). The quantum sum over representations is well approximated by a path integral over classical sources with an exponential weight whose argument is the quadratic Casimir operator of the group. The contributions of the higher N_c-2 Casimir operators are suppressed by powers of k.     A quasi-particle model is presented which describes QCD lattice results for the 0, 2 and 4 quark-flavor equation of state. The results are mapped to finite baryo-chemical potentials.     Entropy production and equilibration in Yang-Mills quantum mechanics

    The Husimi distribution provides for a coarse grained representation of the phase space distribution of a quantum system, which may be used to track the growth of entropy of the system. We present a general and systematic method of solving the Husimi equation of motion for an isolated quantum system, and we construct a coarse grained Hamiltonian whose expectation value is exactly conserved. As an application, we numerically solve the Husimi equation of motion for two-dimensional Yang-Mills quantum mechanics (the x-y model) and calculate the time evolution of the coarse grained entropy of a highly excited state. We show that the coarse grained entropy saturates to a value that coincides with the microcanonical entropy corresponding to the energy of the system.Comment: 23 pages, 23 figure

    Forming Disoriented Chiral Condensates through Fluctuations

    Using the influence functional formalism, classical equations of motion for the O(N) model are derived in the presence of a heat bath, in both the symmetric phase as well as the phase of spontaneously broken symmetry. The heat bath leads to dissipation and fluctuation terms in the classical equations of motion, which are explicitly computed to lowest order in perturbation theory. In the broken phase these terms are found to be large for the sigma field, even at zero temperature, due to the decay process sigma -> pi pi, while they are small for the pi fields at temperatures below T_c = 160 MeV. It is shown that in large volumes the presence of dissipation and fluctuations suppresses the formation of disoriented chiral condensates (DCC's). In small volumes, however, fluctuations become sufficiently large to induce the formation of DCC's even if chiral symmetry has not been restored in the initial stage of the system's evolution.Comment: 34 pages, 11 figures, ReVTeX, eps-, aps-, psfig-style files require

    Primate occurrence across a human-impacted landscape in Guinea-Bissau and neighbouring regions in West Africa: using a systematic literature review to highlight the next conservation steps

Although the West African forests are considered a nonhuman primate hotspot, knowledge on the distribution of many species is often lacking and out-of-date. Considering the fast-changing nature of the landscapes in this region, up-to-date information on primate occurrence is urgently needed, particularly of taxa such as colobines, which may be more sensitive to habitat modification than others. Understanding wildlife occurrence and mechanisms of persistence in these human-dominated landscapes is fundamental for developing effective conservation strategies. Methods In this paper, we aim to review current knowledge on the distribution of three threatened primates in Guinea-Bissau and neighbouring regions, highlighting research gaps and identifying priority research and conservation action. We conducted a systematic literature review of primate studies from 1976 to 2016 in Guinea-Bissau, southern Senegal and western Guinea (Boké Region). We mapped historical observation records of chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes verus), Temminck’s red colobus (Pilicolobus badius temminckii) and king colobus (Colobus polykomos), including our preliminary survey data from Dulombi, a newly established National Park (NP) in Guinea-Bissau. Results We found 151 documents, including 87 journal articles, that contained field data on primates in this region. In Guinea-Bissau, nearly all studies focussed south of the Corubal River, including mainly Cantanhez, Cufada, and Boé NP’s. In Senegal, most of the data came from Fongoli and Niokolo-Koba NP. In Boké (Guinea) studies are few, with the most recent data coming from Sangarédi. In Dulombi NP we recorded eight primate species, including chimpanzees, red colobus and king colobus. Across the selected region, chimpanzees, red colobus and king colobus were reported in eleven, twelve and seven protected areas, respectively. Discussion Our study demonstrates large geographical research gaps particularly for the two colobines. For the first time after more than two decades, we confirm the presence of red colobus and king colobus north of the Corubal River in Guinea-Bissau. The little information available from large parts of the red colobus range raises questions regarding levels of population fragmentation in this species, particularly in Casamance and across northern Guinea-Bissau. There are still no records demonstrating the occurrence of king colobus in Senegal, and the presence of a viable population in north-eastern Guinea-Bissau remains uncertain. While the occurrence of chimpanzees in Guinea-Bissau and Senegal is well documented, data from Boké (Guinea) are sparse and out-of-date. Our approach—the mapping of data gathered from a systematic literature review—allows us to provide recommendations for selecting future geographical survey locations and planning further research and conservation strategies in this region.This study was conducted under the FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, Portugal) funded project EXPL/IVC-ANT/0997/2013

    Chaotic Symmetry Breaking and Dissipative Two-Field Dynamics

    The dynamical symmetry breaking in a two-field model is studied by numerically solving the coupled effective field equations. These are dissipative equations of motion that can exhibit strong chaotic dynamics. By choosing very general model parameters leading to symmetry breaking along one of the field directions, the symmetry broken vacua make the role of transitory strange attractors and the field trajectories in phase space are strongly chaotic. Chaos is quantified by means of the determination of the fractal dimension, which gives an invariant measure for chaotic behavior.
